Lately, I have been reflecting on something many of us see every day but do not always pause to think about: the growing role of screens and digital devices in the lives of children.
Technology is a beautiful tool. It has made learning easier, communication faster, and access to information limitless. But with all of that, I find myself asking a simple question: are we being intentional about how and when children are introduced to it?
In many homes today, devices have quietly become a constant companion for children, sometimes for learning, but often for convenience. Early childhood is a delicate stage of development, and research backs this up. Pediatric researcher Dimitri Christakis, whose work informs American Academy of Pediatrics guidance, has found that heavy early screen exposure is linked to shorter attention spans and slower language development in young children.
After a child is born, their mind is still forming: learning how to think, focus, explore, and connect. These are not just small milestones. They are the foundation for how that child will engage with life, and they are best built through interaction, play, curiosity, and real-world experience.
When screens become the primary form of engagement too early or too often, they can begin to replace some of these natural developmental processes. Not dramatically, not immediately, but gradually and quietly.
This is not about removing technology or rejecting progress. It is about balance. Children still need conversations that stretch their thinking, play that sparks imagination, and experiences that build confidence and independence. Technology can support growth, but it should not take the place of these essentials.
So here is a simple starting point: before handing a child a screen today, ask what a few extra minutes of real-world play or conversation might build instead.
Because in the end, we are not just raising children who can use devices. We are raising minds that will shape the future, and that responsibility deserves thoughtfulness.
