It's Not Always a Trauma Problem: Sometimes It's a Growth Problem
Not all stuck patterns come from trauma. Psychologist Carol Dweck's research suggests some of it comes from never choosing to grow, and that choice is still available.
We have too many young people who are grown in age but not mature in life.
I say this with full awareness that some of what looks like immaturity is sitting on top of genuine pain nobody helped them process. Trauma is real. Its effects on development are real. Anyone carrying unaddressed wounds deserves compassion, not condemnation.
But that is not the whole story. There is another category, quieter and harder to name: the person who has not been through extraordinary hardship, who has simply never chosen to grow.
Psychologist Carol Dweck's research on growth mindset offers a useful lens here. Dweck found that people who believe abilities and character can be developed through effort tend to keep growing throughout life, while those who believe traits are fixed tend to stall, waiting for readiness to arrive on its own. Maturity, in this view, is not a function of age. It is a function of intention.
And intention requires something most people underestimate: the willingness to look honestly at where you are underdeveloped and do something about it. Not defensively. With the kind of ownership that says, I am not where I need to be, and that is mine to address.
That moment of ownership is where growth actually begins.
Underdevelopment is not a life sentence. It is a current location, one that changes the moment you decide it will. The gap between where you are and where you could be does not close on its own. It closes because someone stood up and chose to learn, to build, to fail and adjust and keep moving.
So today, try this: name one area where you have been waiting for time to do what only intention can do. Then take one small, deliberate step in it.
Growth should be visible in how you communicate, how you handle difficulty, how you treat people when it costs you something. Not perfection. Becoming.
I will grow. I will learn what I do not know. I will build what is not yet built.
